
Henry Cotton (1907-1987) won a total of 37 tournaments in the 1930s and in the first few years after the Second World War. He won the British Open in 1934, 1937, and 1948. He was knighted just before his death. He married Isabel-Maria Estanguet "Toots" de Moss, the daughter of a Buenos Aires beef merchant.
Denny Shute, the American golfer who lost to Cotton, won the PGA Championship in 1936 and 1937; the next golfer to win this tournament in consecutive years was Tiger Woods in 1999 and 2000.
