Frank Finnigan

Toronto Daily Star, February 15 1935

Frank Finnigan (1901-1991), known as the "Shawville Express", had a long and distinguished career in the National Hockey League. He played for the Ottawa Senators from 1923 to 1931, played for the Maple Leafs in the 1931-32 season, and then returned to Ottawa, where he scored the Senators' final goal before they were relocated to St. Louis in 1934.

Finnigan played two more seasons with the Leafs after this, serving as a defensive-minded forward. After his career ended, he overcame a bout of alcoholism and became a hotel manager.

Finnigan was the last living member of Ottawa's 1927 Stanley Cup winning team. He became part of the campaign team to restore hockey to Ottawa. He was scheduled to drop the puck for the new franchise's first game, which was in the 1992-93 season, but he passed away before then. His son dropped the puck in his place and his uniform number 8 was retired in his honour.
