George Lansbury

Toronto Daily Star, May 2 1936

George Lansbury (1859-1940) was a Christian, a pacifist, a socialist, and a supporter of women's suffrage. He was the leader of the Labour Party from 1932 to 1935, taking over after the party fell from 287 seats to 52 in the 1931 general election. His pacifist stance grew less popular within the party as other countries started to re-arm, so he resigned his leadership in 1935. He passed away from stomach cancer five years later.
