Newton C. Marshall

Toronto Daily Star, April 10 1934

A search turned up more details on Mr. Marshall's ordeal. A TIME magazine article that appeared six days after this photo told the story: his plane had crashed in the jungle on March 10th. Unable to move from his seat in the plane, he remained there two weeks until he finally managed to get himself out. Local tribesmen found him and carried him for seven days until he reached civilization.

I also found a California newspaper article on Mr. Marshall's crash and a link to a page describing a collection of his photographs. He apparently remained in South America until his retirement in the early 1950s.

While the caption above lists him as a sole survivor of his plane crash, he isn't included on this list of sole survivors because others had survived the crash but passed away after it.
