Apparently, they were not going high-brow.

Gladstone Murray (1893-1970) was born William Ewart Gladstone Murray, after the former British Prime Minister. He served as a pilot in World War I and worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation from 1924 to 1935. When the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was founded in 1936, he became its first general manager, serving in that post until 1942.

After leaving the CBC, he founded an organization called the Responsible Enterprise Movement and lectured on various topics. The University of Toronto Discover Archives website has a page on him.
