A report of a missing woman, then as now, naturally leads us to assume that the worst had happened. But, fortunately, Maude Nesselrodt was eventually found: a New York Times article from November 20 1928 reported that she was safe at home after "thrilling experiences".
As it happened, this was not the last time that Ms. Nesselrodt went missing: an April 27 1930 article from the Times reported that she was found unconscious in a Virginia thicket after disappearing the previous day.
Both of the articles are behind a paywall, so I don't know why she kept disappearing. I could find no record of her after her second disappearance.
