A search revealed several articles on Ms. Titterton's murder: a History Channel page, a post in the Ephemeral New York blog, and a New York Daily News article. At first, the crime looked like it would be difficult to solve, as the killer had left no fingerprints. But police found a 13-inch cord under her body in the bathtub and a single horsehair in the bedroom.
They traced both to an upholstery shop in the neighbourhood and arrested John Fiorenza, an assistant who worked there. He confessed to the killing and was executed on January 21 1937.
