Norman Verrill

Toronto Daily Star, August 21 1934

Because Norman Verrill had an unusual name, I was able to trace him in the Toronto city directories. He was not in the 1934 directory, presumably because he was too young, but I found him in the 1936 directory, listed as an employee at the Davenport Hotel.

By 1938, he was a tapman at the Hotel Morrissey. In 1941, he was still there and was living at 17 Millwood Road, which became his long-term residence. By 1943, he was head tapman at the hotel.

After the war, he became a salesman and then an office manager. I traced him as far as 1980, when he was the office manager and secretary-treasurer for the Ontario Cork Company and still living at 17 Millwood. I couldn’t find an obituary notice or an ancestry page for him.

17 Millwood Road is one of only two houses left on that part of the street. It was definitely uninhabited by 2014. The latest plans call for two towers on the site, one 30 stories and one 45 stories.
