This is one of the first songs that I remember from when I started listening to the radio in 1971. It's fun and jazzy and harmless.
I didn't know until today that Ashton, Gardner and Dyke were British. Tony Ashton and Roy Dyke were from Blackpool and were part of a band that backed George Harrison on his 1968 album Wonderwall Music before joining forces with Kim Gardner.
"The Resurrection Shuffle" reached #3 on the UK singles chart and #7 in Toronto but only made it to #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Tom Jones covered it later in 1971; his version is a faithful rendition of the original and managed to make it two places higher on the Billboard chart at #38. It didn't get airplay in Toronto.
Ashton, Gardner and Dyke (I really want to insert an Oxford comma in there but shouldn't) persisted long enough to record three albums but did not achieve any further success. They split up in 1972. Ashton and Gardner both passed away from cancer in 2001; Dyke is still alive and turns 81 this year.
