Joe Jeffrey Group - My Pledge Of Love

July 1969 - Weeks On Chart: 8 - Highest Position: 5

When I started listening to this, I realized after a bit that not only had I heard it before - I used to hear it all the time. I don't listen to radio much anymore so I don't know if this is being played on any boomer music radio stations. It strikes me as being at the intersection point between soul and pop, though the rhythm guitar drives the song more here than on most songs of this type. I thought it was OK but don't feel a need to listen to it repeatedly.

The Joe Jeffrey Group were from Cleveland. "My Pledge Of Love" was their first single release; it reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 nationally in Canada. It also reached #3 in Brazil. They released three other singles, the last of which was a version of "My Baby Loves Lovin'", which would become a hit for White Plains (the two versions are structured about the same). The three singles reached #108, #109, and #115 on the Billboard chart, which seems like a gradual downhill slope.

Joe Jeffrey and his group don't appear to have done much after that. In the mid-1970s, Jeffrey regularly performed in a bar in the Cleveland area, but that seems to be about it.
