King Floyd - Groove Me

February 1971 - Weeks On Chart: 10 - Highest Position: 5

This song has a few too many random grunts for my taste but musically it reminds me of Jamaican reggae records from about the same period.

King Floyd (1945-2006) was from New Orleans. He was working in the post office when he recorded "Groove Me". Originally intended as the B-side of a single, it reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. Floyd then quit his post office job.

His followup, "Baby Let Me Kiss You", reached #29 on the Hot 100 but only #69 in Canada; it didn't get airplay in Toronto. Floyd continued releasing singles until 1977 but didn't match his previous success. He fell out of favour when disco took over the airwaves.

Created March 26, 2026.
