Unfortunately, I couldn't finish this - I found that the singer's voice was a bit nasal and got on my nerves. These things happen.
Shep and the Limelites were a doo-wop trio that got together in Queens, New York. "Daddy's Home" reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later became a hit for Jermaine Jackson in 1972, reaching #9.
The trio's lead singer, James Sheppard, had previously fronted another doo-wop group, The Heartbeats. They reached #53 in 1957 with "A Thousand Miles Away". Both songs were co-written by Sheppard and were similar enough that the publisher of the earlier song sued the publisher of the later song for copyright violation and won. This put an end to the Limelites' record label and to the Limelites, who had reached the lower levels of the charts a few other times.
Sheppard died on January 24, 1970 from gunshot wounds resulting from an attempted robbery on the Long Island Expressway. The other Limelites, Charles Baskerville and Clarence Bassett, passed away in 1995 and 2005.
