Michael Tarry - Rosalie

July 1973 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 12

This is another song I hadn't heard in over half a century and it took me a while to recall that I had heard it. It belongs in the category of earnest folk-pop, which isn't a style that I particularly like, but this was pleasant enough. The lyrics are a bit off-putting, though: from the sound of it, Rosalie lived upstairs from the narrator and he had strong feelings for her that were not reciprocated. I felt a bit sorry for Rosalie, to be honest.

Michael Tarry (1946-2013) was born Michael Terry McDermott. He was from a town near Manchester in England and his family moved to Canada in 1958. He released eight singles and one album between 1968 and 1974; some of the other singles placed on the Canadian country and adult contemporary charts, but only "Rosalie" made to the Canadian pop chart, reaching #8 and earning Tarry a Juno award nomination. As far as I know, he never charted in the United States or elsewhere.

Later in life, Tarry moved to Marmora, Ontario, where he became a radio announcer. The Museum of Canadian Music website has a biography of him.
