Danny O'Keefe - Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues

November 1972 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 12

This belongs in the class of songs by earnest singer-songwriters. It's not horrible but it tries a bit too hard and I had to turn it off after about two minutes.

Danny O'Keefe started his musical career in the late 1960s as a member of a psychedelic hard-rock band named The Calliope, as that's what people did in the 1960s. "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. (O'Keefe had recorded a faster-tempo version of the song on an album released in 1970 but I couldn't find it anywhere.)

O'Keefe hasn't had any significant chart action since then but has kept on with his career, releasing an album as recently as 2023. He's been a successful songwriter - his songs have been recorded by Elvis, Jackson Browne, Glen Campbell, John Denver, Willie Nelson, and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

Created October 8, 2026.
