The Serendipity Singers - Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man)

May 1964 - Weeks On Chart: 11 - Highest Position: 7

This song is driving me crazy because I'm convinced that I grew up listening to a different version of it but I can't find it. Argh. If I figure it out, I'll update this page. For now, there's this version, which is a bit too whitebread for my taste.

The Serendipity Singers started out at the University of Colorado as The Newport Singers before moving to New York and changing their name. They established a residency in Greenwich Village and then appeared six times on the TV show Hootenanny in the fall of 1963, which made them well-known enough to receive a recording contract.

"Don't Let The Rain Come Down" is based on a nursery rhyme titled "There Was A Crooked Man". The Serendipity Singers' version of this song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their followup, "Beans In My Ears" (which I found unlistenable) reached #30 on the Billboard chart but did not receive any airplay in Toronto.

The Serendipity Singers continued to record through the 1960s without achieving notable success. The last original member left in 1970. Other performers using the name continued to tour into the 21st century.

Created December 16, 2025.
