This has all the components of a successful girl-group song of the early 1960s but, for some reason, I found it annoying. Oh well.
The Sherrys were from Philadelphia. "Pop Pop Pop-Pie" was written to cash in on the popularity of a dance called "The Popeye", which originated in New Orleans in 1962 and was apparently more popular than the Twist there. The song only reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, so it did better in Toronto than elsewhere.
The group followed up with "Slop Time", commemorating a dance called The Slop, but this wasn't as successful. They remained popular in Europe for some time; one member of the group, Charlotte Butler, became half of the husband-and-wife duo Svenne & Lotta, which released several singles and albums in Scandinavia in the 1970s and 1980s.
