Titus Turner - We Told You Not To Marry

January 1960 - Weeks On Chart: 5 - Highest Position: 36

I looked this up because I was fascinated by the title. It turns out that this is an answer record to Lloyd Price's "I'm Gonna Get Married", which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the CHUM chart in 1959. I didn't bother listening to all of it - after a few seconds, I got the point already. But it did occur to me that this song has exactly the same theme as The Specials' "Too Much Too Young" - somebody got married too soon and is stuck with adult responsibilities when everyone else his age is having single adult fun.

Titus Turner (1933-1984) was from Atlanta. He released his first single in 1950. "We Told You Not To Marry" reached #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. The followup, "Sound-Off", reached #77 on the Hot 100 but did not chart in Toronto.

Turner also wrote or co-wrote songs that were recorded by other artists, including: "Leave My Kitten Alone", recorded by Little Willie John; "Sticks and Stones", recorded by Ray Charles; and "Tell Me Why", recorded by Elvis Presley. Turner's last single release was in 1969, after which he seems to have done nothing particularly memorable.
